Rust Repairs

Why rust spreads fast on the Hibiscus Coast

Orewa Panel & Paint · 2 August 2026

Living close to the sea is great for weekends and hard on vehicles. Here is how coastal salt air causes rust and why early repair saves money.

Salt air is relentless

Coastal air carries fine salt that settles into panel seams, stone chips and wheel arches. Once moisture and salt reach bare steel, corrosion starts and keeps going underneath the paint.

Where to look

  • Lower door skins and sills
  • Wheel arches and guard edges
  • Tailgate and boot lid seams
  • Underbody rails and mounting points

Why early repair costs less

Surface rust caught early can often be cut back, treated and refinished. Left alone it perforates the panel, and then the repair means fabricating and welding new metal - much more work.

What a proper rust repair involves

We assess how far the corrosion has travelled, remove the affected metal rather than covering it, treat the surrounding area, then prime and refinish so the repair blends with the rest of the vehicle.
